WHEAT KINGS - SASKATCHEWAN

Submitted by Jon Dreger - President Regina Condors RFC

We are a brand new team to Saskatchewan.

The Wheat Kings are the brain child of Jon Dreger of the Regina Condors rugby club and Leon Bourner of the Saskatoon Wild Oats.

Both teams have a storied history in Saskatchewan. The Condors are the longest active tenured team in Saskatchewan turning 60 in 2027. The Regina Condors began in 1967, but the story predates that by nearly a decade.

The Wild Oats Rugby Football Club was established in 1973 as a result of the successful High School programmes initiated by the Gophers. In its first season the team experienced obvious growing pains but managed, nevertheless, to win the ‘B’ division of the Louis Riel Tournament. With outstanding young players such as Jim Kemp and Dale Matthews, the future prospects of the Wild Oats looked bright. By the late 1970s and early 1980s the Wild Oats club was the dominant force in Northern Saskatchewan winning the Northern League Championship in 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1982.

After two years of participating in the Heritage 10's Old Boys tournament it was time to form a team so we did! The Wheat Kings is the first dedicated provincial Old Boys team for Saskatchewan, and we look forward to playing in Golden Oldies and more tournaments to come!
