In 1995, Vancouver ranked second among 118 international cities for ‘quality of life’ ranked second among 118 cities for ‘quality of life’ (Geneva based Resources Group). The same reasons that make us a great city to come home to – safe, clean, friendly, scenic, international – make us a great place to visit.

WE’RE LUXURIOUS, BUT AFFORDABLE

Vancouver was the first North American city with three five-diamond hotels. The Four Seasons, The Sutton Place Hotel and the Pan Pacific Hotel. In 1995, New York was also awarded this distinction.

WE’RE LOVERS OF LIFE

We boast the largest per capita consumption of wine in any city in North America. To go with it, we’re developing a restaurant (and coffee bar) scene as exciting as any world capital, with chefs from Austria to Vietnam. As a music mecca, we’ve spawned Bryan Adams, BTO, Sarah McLachlan and Loverboy. (For some reason they left out Neil Young).

WE’RE SPORTING

Vancouverites spend more money on sports equipment than any other city in Canada. There are more tennis players in Vancouver, more boats, more firness classes, more vertical feet of skiing and more Nike running shoes sold. It’s tough to name an outdoor sport you can’t so within an hours drive of the Vancouver International Airport, from board sailing, rock climbing and ocean kayaking to golf, scuba diving and tennis. The home of Greenpeace, Vancouver – once a rainforest – and its citizens live on the edge of wildness!

WE’RE CENTRALLY SITUATED

Vancouver is equidistant from Europe and Asia. Thanks to an expanded international airport terminal and a third runway scheduled for completion in Spring 1996, visitors will travel in even greater comfort and convenience.

(2026 update: The airport has won several notable international best airport awards. It won the Skytrax Best North American Airport award in 2007 and 2010 through 2022, for a record of 12 consecutive years, then again in 2024 and 2026. Vancouver also retains the distinction of Best Canadian Airport in the regional results.)

WE’RE THE GOLDEN OLDIES CAPITAL OF CANADA

Golden Oldies rugby has been played in Vancouver for 25 years. (Now 55 years) All the local clubs are preparing to make Vancouver ’97 an event to remember.
